Summer Lovin' Challenge

At the end of May, just before school was out, Amy Severino of Amybeads announced she was hosting the Summer Lovin' Summer Chanllenge.  This was perfect timing for me because I was looking for a few projects for my summer free time.
the start
As soon as I saw the Summer Lovin' Challenge Kit I knew I wanted to participate. I love the Tree of Life pendant from Penny's Lane Polymer Clay.  I thought I was going to stitch little herringbone ropes with little fluted ends to hold pearls, but somewhere along the way I purchased some gold leather and Jamie Cloud Eakin's book Beading with Cabochons.  So the piece became bead embroidery.
The pendant is just under 2.5"
the result
This is my first bead embroidery piece.  I've played around with stitching on leather before, but never have I actually seem anything through from beginning to end.  My edge stitching is a little wonky in a couple places, but I think that I'm getting a feel for how to better space beads so that I don't finish and need to leave a gap or squeeze a last bead into a space.
Take a look and see what the other participants made:

  1. I love how your embroidery transformed the look and feel of the focal, and kept the necklace rather simple in design to let the focal have the spotlight it deserves. Nice color decission too, noticed you left out the golden beads and peach pearls. And I'd never have believed this was the first time you tried bead embroidery.

  2. Good morning ladies...it is just after 5:30 AM and I'm getting ready for my first day of pre-planning at school. I probably won't get a chance to visit your blogs until later this evening, but I can't wait!

  3. Lois - WOW! I love love love this piece! Echoing what Sandra said - I don't think I've ever seen any of your embroidery - but this is gorgeous. There is something about the way those gray pearls frame that focal, it's like a scalloped edging. Photographing it on the bust was brilliant too - it looks perfect on her! And I'm sure it will on you. I 'm always shy about wearing big pieces like these, but then when I do, I'm so glad that I did! Hope the first day back to school was smooth!

  10. The golden seed bead you've used in your bezel really makes the tree in the focal "pop". Your design is very classic and restrained. Wonderful!
